Checking for Originality

NMSU students are expected to abide by the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the Student Handbook and submit only original work. Plagiarism, or the passing off of others’ words, ideas, or work product as your own, is unacceptable and is considered Academic Misconduct. Sometimes students plagiarize because they are unfamiliar with when and how to cite and reference someone else’s work.

As a student,  it is your responsibility to learn how not to plagiarize. Visit the NMSU library’s Plagiarism and Best Practices to Avoid Plagiarism sites for some excellent resources on avoiding plagiarism. Students are encouraged to be proactive and check their work using free or low cost originality checker tools before submitting the assignment.

Visit the Plagiarism On Campus website for a wealth of resources for detecting, preventing and avoiding plagiarism.  Check your understanding of plagiarism at WriteCheck Plagiarism Quiz, Clark College Information Research and Instruction Suite (IRIS), or  Purdue’s Online Writing Lab’s exercises for avoiding plagiarism.

Faculty can support students in avoiding plagiarism by taking a proactive approach.

  • Include a Plagiarism or Academic Integrity section in your syllabus
  • Link to resources and quizzes for learning about plagiarism so students can check their knowledge
  • Point students to originality checker resources
  • Require students to check their assignments before submitting them

Faculty are encouraged to add this webpage URL to their syllabuses and point students to free or low cost originality checker tools.
