Introduction to Chat & IM

While the terms Chat and IM are usually used interchangeably, there are differences. Both will be discussed on this site, but before we get started, let's clear up the confusion a bit about these two technologies.

What is chat?

Chat is a type of online communication. Chat is characterized by synchronous (real-time) communications with anyone who has entered a chat room. Generally speaking, this communication can be via text or voice, although text is more traditional.

What is IM?

Instant messaging, also known as IM, is synchronous and text- or voice-based similar to chat. However, IM is a more private form of communication. It is usually a one-to-one conversation, although it doesn't have to be. The biggest difference between chat and IM is that IM relies on buddy lists: You list people with whom you want to communicate and, when they're online, you will see that and be able to IM them.

Chat and IM Integration

With the rapid advancement of technology, the lines between chat and IM have been blurred. It is possible to use the same software to conduct both chat and IM. Additionally, although both were traditionally text-based communications, they now include voice and video technologies. Finally, as stated at the top of this page, the terms chat and IM are often used synonomously.
