Introduction to Wikis
What is a wiki?
A wiki is many things to many people:
- ultimate web-based collaborative writing environment,
- easy way to create web sites without knowing HTML,
- a way of sharing news, ideas, and resources to a wide audience,
- a really cool software program.
Fortunately, a wiki is all of these things and more. So, in this site will try to introduce you to wikis by:
- exploring some wiki software programs (not all wikis are created equal!),
- discussing various ways of using wikis in support of teaching and learning, and
- providing resources (tutorials, tips, examples, etc.) that will support your use of wikis.
Differences between wikis and blogs
- wikis are subject-driven, blogs are time-driven (posts appear in reverse
- Blogs have an individual diary metaphor and wikis are more like a friendship based on a specific interest
- Blogs are usually WYSIWYG and wikis usually have their own simple wiki syntax
