Admissions process
Anybody enrolled in a class at NMSU must be admitted to NMSU.
For admission to a non-degree program:
- Get admissions forms from the College of Extended Learning (Milton Hall 185).
- Distribute to students for completion at first face-to-face meeting.
- Collect forms from students with $20 admission fee.
- Deliver or fax (575 646-2044) forms immediately to the College of Extended Learning, Milton Hall 185.

General education courses
- Send an email or a memo request for the course needed to the Distance Education Director for the college from which the course originates. Copy the Vice Provost for Distance Education.
- Include in the request the course number, the college from which the course originates, and the college requesting the course.

Students with disabilities
If you have a disability that may affect your performance in this course, or if you require accommodations in order to take a distance education course, contact NMSU's Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). Providing accommodations for distance education students sometimes requires more time than in a traditional classroom setting so students are encouraged to begin working with SSD as early as possible.

Student responsibilities
- Register with SSD and obtain accommodation documents early in the semester.
- Deliver the completed accommodation and testing form(s) to the instructor(s) within the first two weeks of beginning of classes (or within one week of the date services are to commence).
- Retrieve the signed form(s) from faculty and return to SSD within (5) days of the receipt from faculty and at least one week before any scheduled exam.
- Contact the SSD Office if the services/accommodations requested are not being provided, not meeting your needs, or if additional accommodations are needed. Do not wait until you receive a failing grade. Retroactive accommodations cannot be considered
Faculty responsibilities
- Sign the accommodation request form and testing accommodation form (when presented), retain a copy, and return the original to the student within five (5) working days of receipt.
- Contact SSD immediately if there are any questions or disputes regarding accommodation(s), disruptive behavior, etc.
- Refer the student to SSD for any additional accommodations.

Contract courses
Contract course defined
A contract course is one in which the instructor is paid for by funds from a contract or grant and not through regular Instruction and General (I & G) funds. I & G funding is the preferred way to pay for courses; however, if a course is paid for by a grant or through an outside agency, that course is not eligible for I & G funding.
The College of Extended Learning can host face-to-face or distance courses for academic credit that cannot be offered through regular academic channels. These courses in the past have included:
- Professional development courses for school districts.
- Mini-courses from extension services.
- Licensure courses from education agencies.
- Workplace development courses for private companies.
These courses may be have restricted or open enrollment.
Authorizing a contract course
- Complete the Course Authorization form. This form must be signed by the Department Head and College Dean or College Distance Education Director.
- Complete a contract. This contract must be signed by the College Dean or the College Distance Education Director and the Vice Provost for Distance Education before being signed by the contractor agent.
- Mail to the College of Extended Learning, MSC 3WEC, or deliver to Milton Hall 185.

Registering and admitting students in contract courses
Students need to complete forms for NMSU admission and registration at or before the first class meeting.
- Registration: Distribute the Contract Course Registration to students at the first class meeting. Return completed forms to the College of Extended Learning.
- Admission: Students not already admitted to NMSU must apply for admission.
- Online application
- Students must complete the Non-Degree Application form.
- Paper application
- Get admissions forms from the College of Extended Learning (Milton Hall 185).
- Distribute to students for completion at first face-to-face meeting.
- Collect forms from students with $20 admission fee.
- Deliver or fax (575 646-2044) forms immediately to the College of Extended Learning, Milton Hall 185.
- Online application
Students may also apply for admission to a degree program.
Requesting funding for distance education programs
- Complete the Request for Distance Education Program Funds form. This form must be signed by the Department Head and College Dean or College Distance Education Director.
- Mail the completed form to the Office of Distance Education, MSC 3CEL, or deliver to Milton Hall 185.
