Proctored Exam Syllabus Statement

If you are requiring proctored exams for your online course, you need to include information in your syllabus. Examples of syllabus statements that you can customize for your online course are provided below.

Exam Proctoring

This online course doesn’t have proctored exams. (Stop here! The rest of the information doesn’t apply to your online course.)

You will be expected to take the (enter a number) exams for this course as proctored exam(s). The exams are (length of time or range of times) and will be taken (identify delivery format) online in Canvas, as a paper and pencil exam.

(Add a statement clarifying what you require or allow for exam proctoring, such as scratch paper, calculator, 2 pages of notes, etc.)  (Add information clarifying what the conditions are for taking a proctored exam.)

  • All exams must be proctored in a face-to-face environment. Or,
  • Exams can be proctored in face-to-face or online through ProctorU. Or,
  • Exams must be proctored in face-to-face environments unless there are extenuating circumstances such as a documented medical condition, a work schedule that won’t allow you to access a face-to-face proctoring environment, or other situation. You need to contact the instructor for pre-approval to take a proctored exam through the online service ProctorU.

If you live within a 75 mile radius of Las Cruces, you are required to have your exam(s) proctored in (name of building and room number) as follows: Exam 1 day/time, Exam 2 day/time, Exam 3 day/time, etc.

If you live more than 75 miles from Las Cruces, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to have your exam(s) proctored at an approved offsite location. Visit NMSU Office of Distance Education  (ODE) website for approved offsite locations. Complete the online Proctored Testing Form and communicate with the ODE exam proctor to finalize the arrangements.

If you are taking online proctored exams with ProctorU, it is your responsibility to pay for this service.  In order to incur the lowest cost,  it’s recommended you schedule your online proctored exams well in advance of the exam deadline.

Exam Proctoring Syllabus Statement Example 1

You will be expected to take 5 exams for this course as proctored exams. Each exam is 60 minutes and will be taken online in Canvas. Exams must be proctored in a face-to-face environment unless there are extenuating circumstances such as a documented medical condition, a work schedule that won’t allow you to access a face-to-face proctoring environment, or other situation. You need to contact the instructor for pre-approval to take a proctored exam through the online service ProctorU.

If you live within a 75 mile radius of Las Cruces, you are required to have your exams proctored in Business Complex, Room 210. This is at no cost to you.

If you live more than 75 miles from Las Cruces, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to have your exam(s) proctored at an approved offsite location. Visit NMSU Office of Distance Education  (ODE) website. Complete the online Proctored Testing Form and work with the ODE exam proctor to finalize the arrangements. The costs charged by the offsite exam proctoring site, or proctor are your responsibility.

If you are approved to take your online proctored exams with ProctorU, it is your responsibility to pay for this service.  In order to incur the lowest cost, it’s recommended you schedule your online proctored exams well in advance of the exam deadlines.

You will need either a photo ID, such as a Campus ID or Drivers License. No textbooks, notes, or other materials are allowed.

Exam Proctoring Syllabus Statement Example 2

There are 2 proctored exams for this course. Each exam is 120 minutes, or 2 hours long, and will be paper and pencil exams. Exams can be proctored in a face-to-face or an online environment. Scheduling and payment for the exam proctoring site or service are the responsibility of the student.

The midterm exam opens on Oct 13 at 12:01 AM and closes on Oct. 17 at 5 PM. If you will be taking your exam onsite, the midterm will be Wed., Oct 15 from 10 AM to 12 PM or 2 PM to 4 PM in Foster Hall, Room 112.

The final exam opens on Dec. 8 at 12:01 PM and closes on Dec. 12 at 5 PM. If you will be taking your exam onsite, the final will be Wed., Dec. 10 from 10 AM to 12 PM or 2 PM to 4 PM in Foster Hall, Room 112.

You will need to bring two forms of ID with one being a photo ID, such as a Campus ID or Drivers License. You will need to bring pencils, scrap paper, and a graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-86. Not TI-89, TI-92 or TI-Nspire).  No other materials are allowed. Your exam scrap paper will be collected after the exam.
