Strategic Plan for Distance Education

Executive Summary

In January 2009, faculty and staff from across NMSU met to draft strategic priorities for 2009–2013 for NMSU’s Office of Distance Education. Highlights of the two-day facilitated session included a recollection of our beginnings as distance educators, an assessment of significant changes in the field, and a session defining our most desirable future for distance education in 2013.

Participants defined challenges to be addressed before we can get to the most desirable future. These challenges centered around administrative and technical support for distance faculty and students, and expanding degree offerings, as detailed in the goals below (alignment with Living the Vision [LTV] noted after the goal).

Goals

  1. In collaboration with the Colleges, distance education will continue to increase diversity by enabling access of underserved groups, including rural, non-traditional, financially challenged, bilingual, multilingual, and international students (LTV 2)
  2. In collaboration with the Colleges, the Office of Distance Education will continue to coordinate technology, support academic programs, and develop policy mechanisms to facilitate flexible degree and certificate programs (LTV 1, 5)
  3. The distance education community will continue to facilitate and collaborate among departments, colleges, and other stakeholders to achieve a dynamic learning environment for faculty, staff, and students (LTV 1, 5)
  4. The Office of Distance Education will continue to provide personnel and other resources to assist course development and design, integration of innovative technology, communication of best practices for online teaching and support for distance learning students; Office of Distance Education supports establishing a coordinated, funded university tech support center, available to faculty and students (LTV 1, 5)
  5. The Office of Distance Education will continue its transparent budgeting process that supports program sustainability, and considers input from the distance education community (LTV 1, 5)
  6. In collaboration with the Colleges, the Office of Distance Education will continue to ensure quality and consistency of courses, regardless of delivery mechanisms, and will assist in maintaining academic integrity (LTV 1, 5)
